Last Macintosh to be produced in 2006

Potential buyers encouraged to wait until then

Reliable sources revealed Wednesday that Apple Computer will release the final Macintosh in mid 2006. After that, Apple will focus only on digital devices, such as the iPod.

Many potential Macintosh buyers, always afraid that their new Macintosh purchase will be obsolete shortly after they buy it, have decided to put off buying a new Mac until the last one is made four years from now.

"The last Macintosh created will always be the latest and greatest Macintosh," said Steve White, who's looking to replace his old blue and white G3 Mac tower. "There's never gonna be another Mac to replace that one because there's never gonna be another Mac. Why should I go out and buy a dual 1.25 gigahertz PowerMac when it's gonna be out of date by the time the next MacWorld rolls around?"

Some thought the final Mac would be the dual 1 GHz PowerMacs released in early 2002. They assumed Motorola would never be able to go beyond the one gigahertz mark with their microprocessors. Unfortunately, the dual 1.25 GHz processor Mac proved them wrong. Now consumers are worried the dual 1.25 GHz may be trumped sometime in the future, making their Macintosh purchase completely worthless.

"I know that eventually I'm going to want the fastest Mac available," said Mac owner Jeff Stanley. "That's gonna be the 2006 Macintosh. Why should I waste my money buying another one in the meantime when I know that I'm eventually going to get rid of it anyway? Once your Mac is no longer the fastest one out there, you might as well throw it away. It's worthless."

Mac users who have been waiting for the perfect time to buy a new computer finally see 2006 as the light at the end of the tunnel.

"I've been waiting to replace my Macintosh SE for years!" said Macintosh SE owner Cindy Potts. "Now I finally know that my next Mac won't ever be obsolete. I've held off buying a new Mac for this long, I can wait another four years. I can't wait to see what all my pornographic GIFs look like in color!"

But not everyone agreed with those who are waiting until 2006.

"This is stupid," said Mac user Eric McCrone. "If you need a new Mac, buy one now! If everyone waited three months to see if something better was going to come along every time they wanted to buy some consumer electronics device, no one would ever buy anything!"
