In the September 2001 issue of MacAddict magazine, As The Apple Turns was declared the "Best Mac-Related Web Site" on page 28, sending other Mac-related web sites into a frenzy over a title that they believe is rightfully theirs.
According to MacAddict, As The Apple Turns is a "consistently funny read" which "maintains a sense of humor and style while not taking itself too seriously."
"What the hell is this crap?" was the reaction from Jay Runquist, creator of MacAnonymous. "I have in-depth articles, movies, pictures... And all As The Apple Turns has is boring little articles! And that Stickies format, yeah, that's original."
Obviously the people at MacNN were not too happy with not being considered "The Best Mac-Related Web Site" either. A recent news article on their site read:

"As The Apple Turns" was declared "The Best Mac-Related Web Site" in the September 2001 issue of MacAddict magazine. Well if they're so frickin great how come you're reading this right now? Huh? Oh, we understand. You wanted to get some REAL news. Then you'll head over to As The Apple Turns so you can read a funny spin on what you've read here. Well, ya know what? How about we just ban your IP address? Don't think we'll do it? Just try us, buddy. (8 comments) |
Apple Computer was surprised by the news as well. "We ARE Mac. We're Apple!" said Natalie Sequeira from Apple's public relations department. "How could they overlook apple.com? Without us, MacAddict wouldn't even exist."
Perhaps most confused was former MacAddict webmaster Niko Coucouvanis. "I used to ask my coworkers what they thought of [MacAddict.com] and they'd say 'Oh, it's the best Mac-related web site around!' Then they turn around and stab you in the back. If your own company doesn't like its web site, what's the point?"
Ian
Sammis replaced Coucouvanis as MacAddict.com webmaster on August 10.
"The MacAddict article doesn't seem to be very scientific," said Guernsey Research analyst Chris LeTocq. "[As The Apple Turns] may be a 'funny' web site, but does that really make it the best? What surveys were conducted to reach this conclusion? Or was it just decided upon by a group of writers at the magazine? The study is flawed at best."
The "Best" rating may also be slightly biased. In the July 2001 issue of MacAddict magazine, Jack Miller of As The Apple Turns had an article beginning on page 41 entitled "The Handspring Wilderness Handbook" in which Miller ventured into the wilderness across the street from his house equiped with only a Handspring handheld computer and various plugins for it. Two months later, MacAddict declares his website the best.
An anonymous insider thinks MacComedy may actually be the best Mac-related web site. "Hey, remember when we did that article about some kid not wanting to lick his new iBook? Man, that stuff was freakin' HILARIOUS!" The insider then saw a squirrel running around outside and proceeded to chase after it, laughing like a little school girl.
As The Apple Turns features three creative, witty new Mac-related articles every day, Monday through Friday.
